They visited coffee co-operatives CAC Pangoa and Chirinos. The exchange was funded by Comic Relief with the aim of learning about different approaches to coffee production by co-operatives – from how they manage the coffee plants on the land, to processing methods, to composting, to how they function as a co-operative.
Bukonzo Joint Co-operative has already decided to put the learning into action and is to build an organic compost plant to help farmers boost soil fertility. They are also working on setting up a Coffee Rehabilitation programme to offer loans to farmers to renovate their land and are looking at how they can start a similar youth programme to encourage young farmers to stay and work in coffee.
